TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Some call it the gateway to downtown Toledo, others – a notorious speed trap. Now the speed limits on Dorr Street are up for debate.
Tony Kynard grew up along Dorr Street in west Toledo.
"Over the years, I've seen…a couple accidents at Richards and Dorr area, where the speeding was an issue," Kynard said. "I've seen an accident when I was younger, somebody died."
Now city council is considering a plan to change the speed limit on Dorr Street. In Kynard's area, from Reynolds to Green Hills Road, the speed limit would drop from 50 to 45 miles per hour. From Green Hills to Coventry, it would stay at 40. Then from Coventry to Manila, it would decrease from 40 to 35, and from Manila to Washington, it would increase from 30 to 40.
Dorr Street is in Councilman Tyrone Riley's district. He says he's ready for lower speeds in the area.
"By reducing the speed limit by five miles per hour, people feel more comfortable," Riley said. "It would allow pedestrians as well as motor vehicles to gain access to Dorr Street a whole lot better."
Increasing the speed closest to downtown could make all drivers happy. The current 10-miles-per-hour decrease has cost many drivers a ticket.
"I got a ticket down there, myself," Kynard said. "I think it is a little too slow. The drop of speed is just too drastic."
City council could vote by next Tuesday to ask ODOT to change the speed limits.
