TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police are investigating a Sunday shooting that left a man dead outside a south Toledo nightclub.

According to police, officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of Airport Highway around 3:30 a.m., after reports of a shooting. Officers arrived to the parking lot of Club Status to find the body of Lamar R. Booker, 23, who was fatally shot.

No arrests have been made. The cause of the shooting is unclear at this time.

The shooting has left police with more questions than answers Monday as they work to figure out who killed Booker and why. Flowers and a stuffed animal lie outside of the club on Airport Highway, where Booker was killed.

"A fight started inside the club. The security pushed all the combatants outside. Some time outside, someone went and retrieved a gun and the victim was shot once in the chest," said Deputy Chief George Kral with the Toledo Police Department.

Police say they are still interviewing witnesses and following up on leads. They say the bar is not in a particularly troubled area and unfortunately, something like this could happen anywhere.

"This appears just to be a random thing. It was two guys who got into a fist fight, and one person decided to escalate it, and we have a tragedy like this," said Kral.

Toledo has a long and storied history of hockey in the city going back to the first team, the Toledo Mercurys, who played their first season in 1947-48. Other iterations included the Blades, the Hornets, the Goaldiggers and the Storm. For a short time, in 1949-50, the team was actually called the Toledo Buckeyes.
