Northwood says May levy last chance to get state funding

NORTHWOOD, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Northwood Local School district is hoping to take advantage of state help to build a new schools building, but time is running out.

Leaders say they are hoping to construct a brand new, pre-k through 12 building. The district's last chance to get state help for the project would be to pass a levy slated for the May ballot. If the levy is approved, the state would cover about a third of the project's cost.

Superintendent Greg Clark compares the decision to build a new school to the decision to purchase a new vehicle. He says at a certain point it becomes more expensive to maintain the old building than it would be to buy a new one.

The district's current elementary building was constructed in 1938. The building is wired with 20 amp circuits. That amount of power may have been sufficient for a pre-World War II classroom, but in the age of laptops and tablets, teachers say fuses often blow. That temporary loss of power is not just a distraction for students. Clark says the power limits the technology teachers can use.

Clark also says a lot of money is going towards maintaining the building. For example, moisture often seeps into the walls.

The district is asking voters to approve a 4.9 mill levy to be collected over 37 years. A similar levy was defeated by just two votes last November.

Superintendent Greg Clark says anyone with questions about the levy can call him directly. He is even offering tours of the elementary building to help get the levy approved. Call Clark at 419-691-3888 for more information.
