If you were in North Toledo Saturday night, you may have seen smoke just billowing into the air. Toledo fire crews were called out to a fire at Omnisource Recycling plant.  Crews got to the plant on North Detroit just after 6 p.m. and they say a pile of sheet iron caught fire. Right now that fire is out and fire crews say there are no environmental issues or runoff problems.

(Toledo News Now) -

To shovel or not to shovel - that is the burning, or in this case, freezing question in town.

Sidewalks that are impassable are a safety hazard.  Forcing people to walk in the street is dangerous, especially when the streets are marginally plowed and contain gaping potholes and swerving, sliding, vehicles.

Homeowners have always understood that keeping sidewalks shoveled is part of the gig.  Cities and municipalities have always understood that keeping streets plowed and navigable is also expected.  Yet we find that all bets are off when our January weather resembles a month in Antarctica.

It has been an epic winter.  That puts extra responsibility on everyone: homeowners, family members, neighbors, city employees, and anyone capable of lending a hand to clear the sidewalks.  There shouldn't be any need for tickets or harsh words.  What we need now is common sense and basic community courtesies.
