TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Graco recently recalled 11 models of child car seats due to malfunctioning buckles that may not unlatch. Whether yours was recalled or not, we have some tips on how you can make sure your child is as safe as possible in the car.

Gina Veres, an injury prevention specialist at ProMedica Toledo Children's Hospital says car crashes are the number one cause of death for children under the age of 14, but having them in a proper car seat can reduce their chances of injury by up to 70 percent.

The hospital's organization, Kids in Safe Seats, helps teach parents the proper way to secure their children. When it comes to car seats, Veres says there are three things parents need to keep in mind:

"The main things to look for when buying a car seat is: Does that car seat fit in your car properly? Does it fit your child correctly? And can you use it correctly every single time?" Veres said.

Another thing she suggests parents do is fill out the recall card that comes with every car seat and send it to the manufacturer. That way if there ever is a recall, they will contact you directly.

If you aren't sure how to properly install a car seat, ask for help. Certified seat technicians can be found through your local police or fire department and Toledo Children's Hospital has weekly classes to help parents.
