BETTSVILLE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Crews from three neighboring communities helped Bettsville departments after a home explosion Thursday morning.

The explosion happened near the intersection of Monroe Street and Union Street.

When one neighbor heard the explosion around 8:15 a.m., he thought the sound came from a nearby stone quarry.

"We just heard a big boom. We thought the factory out here (they blast every day), I thought they were blasting awfully early. And looked out the front window of our house, I could see all the windows were blown out of this one," said Don Rauser, who lives across the street.

Others, including Stan Poe, describe an unusual odor in the air shortly before the explosion happened.

"Went out to start the car...as soon as I stepped out, about three steps out the door, I smelled gas really, really strong," said Poe.

For neighbors, it was an unfortunate incident, which resulted in no injuries and no damage to other homes in the area.

"Fortunately, no one was living in the home. The guy that built it and owned it all these years passed away a couple of years ago," said Poe.

Fire crews did run into a problem with a frozen fire hydrant, but were able to pump in water to extinguish the flames.

The state fire marshal is investigating a cause.
