Man sentenced to 40 years for multiple child rape counts

Frederick Harder Frederick Harder
PORT CLINTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A child rapist learned his fate Wednesday in Ottawa County. Frederick Harder was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Harder was charged with 37 counts of rape involving a minor. Police say this has been a tough case for them to deal with, but they're glad justice has finally been served.

"This case was nightmarish," said Det. Sgt. Corbin Carpenter of the Port Clinton Police. "I would not wish anybody to have to investigate a case like this."

Det. Carpenter says it was a relief for both police and the victim, now a young woman, to see Harder sentenced.

"I was happy to be involved and assist the victim in holding him accountable for what he did," Carpenter said. "I just wish the penalty could have been a little bit stiffer."

Carpenter was glad the judge disregarded the state recommendation of 30 years in prison and went for the maximum 40 years, but Carpenter feels life in prison would have been fair.

Harder was arrested in November of 2012 after a woman found disturbing images of child pornography in a box of books purchased at an auction in Port Clinton. Officials were able to trace the photos to Harder.

"They say a picture paints a thousand words, and I think that was pivotal in getting the plea agreement without having to go to trial and without having to put the victim up on the stand," Carpenter said.

Harder pleaded guilty to four of the original charges. He will be eligible for parole in 20 years.
