BBB Alert: Online dating scams cheat victims out of thousands

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

With Valentine's Day coming up, the Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about Internet dating scams.

Too many men and women are tricked into thinking they have a relationship with "the perfect person" over the web, only to be cheated out of thousands of dollars.

Online dating services can be wonderful but beware of the scammers.

Beware if the person asks to use an outside email or messaging service.  Scammers often claim to be from this country but are currently traveling, living or working abroad.

Users should look at the person's Facebook profile, checking for grammatical errors. Is the page brand new? Does the person only have a few friends? Beware!

Scammers will eventually ask for credit card information, often using a story of an emergency such as a sick relative or stolen wallet.

Another angle is for the scammer to say he or she needs money to come and visit the victim, but never show up.

The BBB recommends users only meet local people and don't trust relationships from other countries.
