Adrian looks to convert downtown historic buildings into apartments

ADRIAN, MI (Toledo News Now) -

A new incentive program is available to downtown property owners in Adrian, MI.

Downtown Adrian has seen a lot of positive change recently, but now local leaders want to take it a step further. They're working with building owners, encouraging them to add more life and living space to the often vacant upper levels.

"There's so much potential in downtown Adrian. We have all these beautiful historic buildings, but many times, it's cost prohibitive to develop those buildings," said Kathleen Eriksen with Eriksen Development.

Eriksen's company is teaming up with the city to apply for state funds through the Rental Rehab Program to develop the upper stories of historic buildings into living spaces. Qualified property owners can receive up to $35,000 per rental unit.

"This program is by far the most effective program for developing a downtown," she said.

So far it seems several building owners are on board.

"There's a tremendous interest in this program, so we're just really excited to have such reception," said Eriksen.

Officials hope to submit the application within a month. Renovations could follow.
