Downtown Toledo pizza restaurant raises $10,000 with firefighter fundraiser

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Downtown Toledo restaurant PizzaPapalis threw its support behind the families of privates Stephen Machcinski and James Dickman, who died in the line of duty last month.

PizzaPapalis held a fundraiser called "Fill the Boot" Monday night for the fallen heroes' families. All proceeds raised would be donated to the Dickman Family Memorial Fund. Employees donated their time and worked for free, meaning patrons' entire bills, including drinks, could be donated in full. Firefighters even joined in to make pizzas, bartend and serve.

The co-owner of PizzaPapalis says the fundraiser was a no-brainer because one of the restaurant's former general managers is now a Toledo firefighter. He actually was at the same station as Machcinski and Dickman.

The restaurant's goal was to raise $5,000. In the four-hour span, they raised upward of $10,000!

"We far exceeded exceptions. I mean, we were hoping to get something for the night, but what we got was amazing!" said Dave Keen with PizzaPapalis.

Managers at PizzaPapalis say they're just thankful people in the community are able to come together during a time like this.
