Don't Waste Your Money: Dangers of using personal phone for work

(Toledo News Now) -

For anyone who uses a company phone for personal business or a personal cell phone for business calls, we have a warning for you.

If you are like a growing number of employees, your personal phone may also be your company work phone. This is usually not a problem because most of us don't want to carry two cell phones, but it comes with a big potential downside.

BYOD: The Hot New Trend

You've probably heard of BYOB: Bring your own beer. In many offices these days, however, it's BYOD: Bring your own device.

More and more companies, the Wall Street Journal says, are asking employees to use their personal smart phones and tablets for company business, and are reimbursing them for data fees. BYOD is a win-win situation, the Journal says, until you leave the company and find your device wiped clean.

Doesn't That Stink?

What happens when your employer does a remote wipe of your phone or tablet? Contacts, e-mails, photos and more disappear.

The Wall Street Journal says it happens all the time when a person leaves a job - often on the last day, when a key card and company ID are returned.

How To Protect Yourself

The Journal suggests asking management about phone wiping as soon as you announce you're leaving the company.

If you use the same phone as a personal phone and work phone, keep in mind that your company may decide to erase it at some point.

So back up those contacts and photos so you don't waste your money.
