BGSU football star takes to basketball court

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Shaun Joplin has no regrets about playing football, but he's always felt like he had some unfinished business on the basketball court.

Even during the height of his football career at Bowling Green State University, Joplin says he envisioned himself on the basketball team.

"Freshman year, I came down and talked to Coach Orr," Joplin explained. "He told me to focus on football for right now."

So that's what he did. Joplin excelled on the field, but his dream to be on the basketball team wouldn't die. After all, he grew up in a hoops household.

"He loves basketball. His father was a really good coach in college," said Louis Orr, the BGSU basketball coach. "In high school, he was a very good player. He's probably been around basketball more than he's been around football."

As his senior season wound down, Joplin went to Coach Orr once again.

"He told me, ‘Yeah, sure. We could use more bodies,'" Joplin said.

So Joplin joined the team. His jump shot was rusty and there are still no guarantees he'll ever play, but he says just being there is good enough.

"I just want to show that I'm not lazy," he said. "And I want to be out here getting in shape and just getting ready for our pro days."

Playing professional football is still Joplin's ultimate goal, but for now, he's a basketball player. It keeps him in shape and he gets to live out a long-time dream.

"Basketball is a thing I love, too, just like football," he said. "I want to be a part of the team and hopefully try to win another MAC championship."
