TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo used to be a big stop on the Pro Bowlers tour, and while the PBA doesn't come here anymore, its legacy lives on in some very talented athletes who still compete.

Don Genalo has been inside of thousands of bowling allies, but he says it never gets old.

"I still get into it," the former pro said. "There's times when my attitude will show up a little bit – sometimes in a good way, sometimes not."

That attitude helped him along his hall of fame bowling career. Genalo won six national PBA titles, had 18 perfect games and even had his own bowling collector card.

"He's a stroker, is what they call that," said fellow former pro Jeff Kwiatkowski. "He plays up the boards and he's super accurate."

His career was filled with great moments, but the highlight came in 1983 when the New York native made a stop in Toledo that would change his life.

"I won my first title in 1983, the week after I met my wife Mary," Genalo said. "I met her here at the PBA national in Toledo."

Genalo and his wife would eventually settle in Toledo. His priorities shifted. He left the PBA full time in 1991 to spend time with his family.

Years later, bowling remains his passion. Now you can find him at the Toledo Sports Center on Thursdays, where he participates in the KeyBank Travel Classic, one of the top amateur leagues in the country.

"We have a lot of great bowlers in the league. We have five or six Toledo hall-of-famers in it," Genalo said. "We're doing well."

The league is growing, and so is Genalo. Believe it or not, he says he's bowling better now than ever.

"I think the biggest difference is I'm more consistent mechanically," he said. "And I'm more patient."

Even though he plays now as an amateur, it's safe to say Genalo will always be a pro.
