A Petersburg firefighter has been placed on leave after he was arrested on a child sex charge.

John Hollowell is on administrative leave from the Petersburg Fire Department pending the outcome of the court proceeding, according to City Spokesperson Joanne Williams.

Hollowell was arrested on January 29 for object sexual penetration of a minor against her will. Police and prosecutors have not said how he knew the victim.

Word that a firefighter with the city of Petersburg had been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a minor has many in the Dinwiddie community outraged. Mary Glenn has lived here all of her life and says if the accusations are true, it's frightening.

"I don't care who it was, he still should be held accountable for assaulting anyone," Glenn said.

Tammy Edwards, the mother of a young girl, was also upset about these allegations.

"They are supposed to be a good role model for the community, so you should know better," Edwards said.

Hollowell appeared in a Dinwiddie courtroom Tuesday morning. Court documents reveal Hollowell turned himself over to police last week. Authorities would not confirm if he knew the alleged victim or the details surrounding the incident.

Hollowell remains in jail and the investigation is ongoing.
