TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Bowling Green City School District has already canceled school 11 times this year because of snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures.

The excess cancelations have forced district leaders to get creative in order to avoid extending the school year.  The district will now hold classes on President's day, making up for one snow day.

Leaders are also looking at the possibility of extending the school day, or sending school work home with students. The state now allows districts to use "blizzard bags" to make up for calamity days, which means students complete in-class work at home or online.

At least one district official says he thinks having students in class longer each day may be the best option.

"We believe anytime our students can be in front of our teachers that is beneficial to everyone. Before we take a look at blizzard bags we want to take a look at ways to lengthen the instructional day or add instructional days," said Executive Director of Teaching and Learning Tod Cramer.

The district has not yet finalized a plan, and is waiting to see if Governor John Kasich allows districts extra calamity days because of the extreme winter experienced this year.

Leaders say they will have a plan in place before spring break in March.
