Good Samaritan rescues dog from Swift Creek ice

A good Samaritan broke through the ice of Swift Creek Reservoir to save a stray dog Wednesday after he noticed the dog poking his head out of the ice several yards from land.

"This might have looked like a good short cut, lucky for this dog there was a hero nearby," wrote an eyewitness in an email. "Thanks to Daniel Butler… this dog was rescued and handed over to authorities."

Butler took a row boat into the reservoir, breaking through the thin sheet of ice. He then grabbed the dog and hoisted the animal into his boat.

Chesterfield County authorities are now caring for the dog.

"It's a scary though," the eyewitness writes. "This could have just as well been a person. Shows just how dangerous it is to walk on a frozen lake."

The rescue happened just hours after Dinwiddie County Animal Control rescued a dog that fell into frozen waters near White Oak Road. The animal was reportedly in the water for one hour.

"He was treated at the scene for hypothermia and taken to a local vet for further evaluation," writes Dennis E. Hale, chief of Dinwiddie Fire & EMS in an email Wednesday. "He was later released to his owners and is expected to be okay."
