Red Cross scrambling to make up for lack of blood donations

(Toledo News Now) -

The Red Cross is in urgent need of blood donations after Mother Nature played a leading role in recent blood drive cancellations.

You've probably heard it before: a pint of blood can save up to three lives. The problem is the Red Cross is running low on their pints. A heavy dose of snow and sub-zero temperatures last week is to thank for that.

"We had to cancel 14 drives last week, and we had a shortfall of about 360 units," said Tiffany Gradle, communications director for the American Red Cross. "It definitely makes an impact on us because we need to collect about 300 units a day to meet the 23 hospitals that we serve."

The Red Cross of Northwest Ohio has been able to schedule more blood drives, but it's hard to catch up on what they lost.

"We're trying to stock our shelves as fast as we can and just with that weather, unfortunately, as fast as the blood donations are coming in, they're as fast going off the shelves to the hospitals that need them," Gradle said.

They are encouraging everyone to donate if they can. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weight at least 110 pounds and be healthy enough to donate. The Toledo Donor Center on Executive Parkway is open Monday through Saturday.
