Found dog needs donations for hip surgery

Sarge Sarge
(Toledo News Now) -

Sarge was found wandering the streets just days before Thanksgiving. He was covered in fleas and had skin infections, but now he has made a nearly-full recovery.

"He was very severely emaciated," said Nora Solomon, Sarge's foster mother. "You could see all of his bones, all of his hips and everything was just jutting out of his body."

Looking at him now, it's hard to tell what he has been through. He is a playful, kind, young German Shepherd. But he's still on his way to a full recovery.

"Turns out that he's only four years old and he has very severely arthritic hips," Solomon said. "So really the only way he can go about leading a really normal life is to have hip replacement surgery."

After being found wandering the streets of Walbridge by himself, Sarge was taken in by Solomon, and 4 Paws Sake, a non-profit rescue shelter, has been helping him heal.

"We tried to take him off the pain medicine to try to gauge where his pain was," Solomon said. "He was very tired and he didn't run and play and jump. He just kind of acted like a really old dog, and he's not."

Sarge has an upcoming evaluation next Wednesday. If everything checks out, he will go into surgery on Thursday. But the hip replacement costs $4,600-5,000 and Sarge needs help.

There will be a fundraiser for him at Yark Subaru on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The dealership on Central Avenue is inviting the community to get free, engraved pet tags for their pets. Donations will be accepted. In addition, for any vehicle sold there that day, Yark will donate $100 to the Sarge fund.

If you can't make it to Yark Saturday, you can donate to the cause here. Sarge will be up for adoption after he has recovered.
