Video prompts "grave" RPS security concerns

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Richmond Public School leaders admit they have grave concerns after we got our hands on "inexcusable" cell phone video.

The video shows someone setting off the metal detector alarm at Armstrong High School --- and no one stops them.

"We are at Armstrong High School about to walk in the front," said Maurice Morgan, Jr as he shot the video. "Security is not tight in here at all."

Morgan is a counselor with New Pathways Youth Services. He is concerned about the safety of students.

"And the safety of the teachers," said Morgan. "Because I have been a teacher before. I want to go home."

We showed the video to NBC12 education specialist and former state school superintendent Dr. Bill Bosher.

"There is really no excuse for what we have seen," said Dr. Bosher. "I imagine the city is going to find the same thing."

Morgan has one request.

"Pay professional people to keep your schools safe," said Morgan.

Richmond Public School officials are promising action.

"It raises grave concerns for us," said RPS spokeswoman Felicia Cosby. "It is inexcusable, and immediate action is being taken."

Cosby says new school superintendent Dr. Dana Bedden is calling for disciplinary action. She says Dr. Bedden plans to meet with the entire security staff to "articulate" expectations. Cosby says Dr. Bedden will also ask the school board to approve an external security audit.

"Looking to see if we have enough manpower," said Cosby. "Looking to see if our equipment is up to par."

Morgan notes he did get a model response at Capital City Program on Lee Street.

"If you have the medal detectors there," exclaimed Morgan. "Use them!"

The school system will not say what type of disciplinary action will be taken. They are calling this a personnel matter.
