SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield police arrested two teens and recovered a handgun after several shots were fired outside of a Springfield school this afternoon.

After police received tips from "street sources" regarding a possible after-school fight at the High School of Science and Technology, there was a strong police presence at the conclusion of the day, according to Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney.

Two officers in an unmarked car saw the shots fired at the corner of Wilbriham Road and Colonial Avenue and began pursuit. Nineteen-year-old Israel Perez and a juvenile boy were arrested.

The officers immediately caught one of the suspects while the other ran towards the Zion Baptist Community Church parking lot, police said. An officer and his K9 partner found the other suspect hiding inside a trash bin outside a nearby house.

The officers also recovered a loaded .25 caliber semi-automatic gun.

"Springfield police officers did a tremendous job getting the two suspects off the street and recovering a loaded weapon," Delaney said, adding that planning, preparation and deployment prevented anyone from getting seriously injured. "The ‘Quebec Officer's' sources and their relationship with students paid off by having police officers where the potential of violence is about to take place."

Four area schools were placed under lockdown as a precaution and were dismissed as usual shortly after the incident.

Perez was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon (firearm), discharging a firearm and carrying a firearm. He also had outstanding warrants for disturbing a school, threatening to murder and malicious damage over $250. He will be held in Springfield police lockup overnight and arraigned in Springfield District Court tomorrow.
