Injured officer continues to risk his life on the job

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Officer Shane Page is no stranger to dangerous situations.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Officer Page was shot Tuesday morning along the 300 block of Brookside Drive in Fort Mill.

Investigators tell WBTV Page was involved in an effort to arrest James William Lewis.

Lewis, 31, was also shot in the encounter but is expected to survive.

This is far from office Page's first brush with danger.

Page is a member of the Violent Criminals Apprehension Team (VCAT) with CMPD and has been with the department since September 2000.

In 2006, Page found himself in the line of fire, trying to make an arrest at a home in Charlotte. He was not hit, but his colleague was not so lucky. According to police reports, Officer Kayvan Hazrati attempted to enter the house through a side door.

Investigators said a shot was fired from inside the home, hitting the upper part of the side door and striking officer Hazrati in the head.

Hazrati was rushed to University Memorial Hospital.

He survived, but the injury left him with permanent cognitive damage. His career as an officer was over.

Now, almost eight years later, VCAT officers are still putting their lives on the line every day.

Tuesday, it was officer Page who took a bullet. He was shot in the shoulder and abdomen.

Page is recovering at a Charlotte hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.
