Man killed in north Nashville house fire

A man was killed in a house fire early Wednesday morning in north Nashville.

Crews were called out to the blaze at the home on Cephas Street in the Buena Vista area around 1:30 a.m.

Flames were already shooting through the roof by the time crews were able to get to the scene.

After crews worked the blaze for hours, the fire rekindled, and they had to go back to the home.

Officials say 63-year-old Albert Mays tried to escape but was not able to get outside in time.

Mays was a father of four and a grandfather. Family members are working on funeral arrangements.

Family members say the gas wasn't working in the house and Mays was using space heaters to stay warm. He may have been using his oven as well. They say there were not any working smoke detectors inside the home.
