Former Amherst chemist sentenced

Sonja Farak Sonja Farak
NORTHAMPTON, MA (WSHM) -

The Hampshire County chemist accused of stealing drugs from an Amherst crime lab was sentenced on Monday.

Sonja Farak, 35, of Northampton pleaded guilty to all nine charges in court.

The charges included evidence tampering, and stealing drugs from a Umass Amherst lab.

Officials contacted state police when they found an inventory discrepancy.

Farak's attorney, Elaine Polanski, asked Judge Mary Lou Rup for probation, but the judge sentenced Farak to two and-a-half years at the Chicopee Women's Correctional Facility.

Farak was also sentenced to five years of probation.

Polanski told the judge that Farak's drug addiction was to blame for the crimes committed.

Prosecutors told CBS 3 that dozens of cases in Hampden County have been dismissed because of Farak's actions.

Included with the sentence, Farak will have to undergo alcohol and drug screenings, treatment and 500 hours of community service.

The fate of an iconic landmark in one western Massachusetts town is in jeapordy.    The old train depot in East Longmeadow near the center of town is a very familiar sight to residents.  Built in 1876, it's image even adorns the town seal.   However, the fate of the land it sits on is up in the air, and so is the future of the depot.
