High winds leave thousands in the dark on a cold night

Lakewood homes without power Lakewood homes without power

Hundreds of people got a big surprise Thursday evening when they lost power.  The problem was on the west side of Cleveland and parts of Lakewood.

"It's very dark and cold and I don't know. I hope it comes back on soon," said Ashley Gochnauer.

Ashley and Shelley are next door neighbors on the west side. Both lost power early in the evening.

"They'll get it back on but it's probably going to be awhile," added Shelley Combs.

Their entire neighborhood was dark. At one point, hundreds were without power.

First Energy said high winds were to blame for the outages. So many were bracing for a long, cold night in the dark.

"Tonight, put as many blankets on the bed as I can. Just make sure my computer is charged.  I'm trying to use it as little as possible so I can watch movies or something," said Shelley.

"I guess lots of blankets or I'll have to go to a friend's house and stay for the night," Ashley said.

It wasn't just homes. Traffic lights were out at several intersections like this one on Clifton Blvd. and some businesses were feeling the impact of this weather.

Even though winter really is just beginning, some are already dreaming about a change.

"I am done. It was pretty for the holidays. It would have been nice if it left.  I think it would be nice to have spring soon," said Shelley.

Unfortunately, we have a long way to go until spring.

Good news for the people we interviewed Thursday night.  Their power came back on a couple of hours ago.
