KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A Kansas City couple has been charged for child neglect and endangering a child after one of their children, a 6-year-old boy, told police he had been left outside in frigid temperatures.

Daniel S. Greenfield, 39, and Melanie Y. Davis, 34, face four counts of abuse or neglect of a child and one misdemeanor count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

Prosecutors have requested a bond of $150,000.

It happened outside a home in the 3300 block of South Benton Boulevard.  The boy was pounding on the doors and windows trying to get in about 9 p.m. Sunday.

Police say he was locked out for as long as an hour in 15-degree temperatures.

A neighbor finally heard the boy pounding and crying.  She came out and got him and then called police.

When they got there, the little boy told them he had gone to dinner with his family and had fallen asleep in the car.

The parents apparently didn't notice and left him there.  They told officers they thought he was sleeping upstairs.

Police say the house is in really bad shape.  There was no heat inside or hot water, and the dining room ceiling is caved in with water dripping inside.

Kansas City police took all five children living there out of the home, and they're in custody of family services.

A few neighbors say they were concerned about the children living there.  Others said they didn't think the house was fit to live in right now.

"I didn't actually think that anybody was living in there in this community," neighbor Barbara Johnson said.

The little boy also told police he hadn't eaten since the day before, and officers say he appeared malnourished.
