Latonia SWAT: Military vet taken into custody

LATONIA, KY (FOX19) -

The decorated military veteran who barricaded himself inside his home in Latonia has been taken into custody.

Officials say the man surrendered, unharmed and was taken to the hospital for examination. The doors were bolted shut so he had to exit through a window.

As SWAT entered, smoke alarms were set off. Covington Fire Department arrived at the scene to pump water into the home.

Covington Police department and SWAT teams had been trying to negotiate with the man in the 3400 block of Michigan Ave. since 5 p.m. Saturday.

According to Covington Police Chief Spike Jones, the military veteran had barricaded himself inside his home and had fired multiple shots at police. 

Three children were removed from the home. Ages 15, 11 and 5. They were taken to Latonia Elementary School command center to be evaluated. Spike Jones tells FOX19 they appear physically unharmed.

As of 12 a.m. Sunday, Police Chief Jones says the situation was still ongoing. The veteran was threatening to blow up his home.

The veteran was also posting updates to his Facebook saying he was going to harm police officers.

Duke Energy trucks were on the scene. Power and gas had been cut off to the surrounding area and police put out street lights to make the scene outside darker.

Chief Jones says the discussions with the suspect were positive as they urged him to surrender.

Nearby residents were urged to stay indoors, away from windows, and cooperate with authorities.

Chief Jones has added that the man is possibly suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and they were working to safely get him out of the house and in the treatment that he needs.
