CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

How was 3-year-old L'Eah Johnson shot Tuesday night in Avondale?

Cordero Warren of Westwood, the boyfriend of the girl's mother, was arraigned in Hamilton County Municipal Court Friday.

Judge William Mallory said the girl was sleeping on the floor and a gun was placed on the floor near the child. Mallory said the gun went off and shot her.

"It didn't happen outside," Mallory said. "It didn't happen with somebody taking out garbage. It didn't happen on the porch. It happened within the four walls of that bedroom."

Clyde Bennett II, Warren's attorney, said two people who were present at the time will say that the child was playing with the gun under the bed and the gun was fired.

At the time of the incident, the girl's mother -- Ebony McDavis -- told police that Johnson was caught in the crossfire of an overnight shootout in the 3600 block of Tacoma Avenue while Warren took out the trash while holding the child.

Police say that story wasn't true. At the time of the shooting, there had been several 911 calls regarding shots fired in the area but they were not related to the child's injury.

After the shooting investigation began, six people were taken into custody for questioning.

Crime Stoppers increased the reward for information up to $2,000. Police say they had a lot of calls to the tip line offering information.

During subsequent interviews, McDavis admitted that she and Warren decided to use the reported gunfire in a false version of the cause of injury to the child.

Cincinnati Police say they don't know yet exactly what happened but they don't think Johnson was shot on purpose.

McDavis, 28, of Avondale, has been charged with falsification, a first degree misdemeanor. Warren was charged  tampering with evidence and having weapons under disability. Both charges are third degree felonies.

Mallory set Warren's bond at $10,000 on each charge.

McDavis' arraignment was continued to 9 a.m. Saturday.
