Crews brave the cold to repair water main breaks

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

After a water main break Monday in west Toledo on Reynolds near Dorr, crews are working on repairing another one near the same area Tuesday.

In cold weather, not only are street crews busy, but water distribution crews are as well, because water main breaks tend to increase. The city's Water Distribution Department says this month, crews have been called to fix more than 40 water main breaks. Most cases involve older cast iron water lines, which are breaking under pressure from the ground shifting, due to colder temperatures. Workers try to repair those lines when they can without reducing pressure, and the typical repair job involves using a pipe sleeve and clamps to repair broken lines.

Crews are on call 24/7. When they arrived at the scene Tuesday morning, they found water trickling out of the ground, indicating an underground line cracked open.

Other crews, like Columbia Gas, went to the scene to mark where their lines are so no further issues are encountered when digging begins. Another problem for workers is trying to locate the exact point of the problem in the harsh weather conditions.

"Frost goes down as the ground gets colder, that's what causes the ground to shift. They have to cut through that. They have to deal with pumps freezing up, various conditions with ice on the ground, make sure they don't hurt themselves as they're doing their job," explained Terry Russeau, Toledo Water Distribution manager.
