Dubois County man killed in roll over accident

A young Dubois County firefighter sworn in less than a week ago died in an accident Sunday when his truck ran off the road and overturned in a creek.

Officials tell 14 News that 21-year-old Mitchell Haas was a volunteer firefighter with the Ferdinand Fire Department.

The Indiana DNR says Haas left a friend's house Sunday afternoon, and headed west on County Road 175. Soon after, Conservation Officer Mike Kellner says Haas' truck was found lying upside down in the nearby creek.

Haas was taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Officials say it isn't clear what caused the accident and Kellner says it's possible Haas drowned.

"There's some factors there to consider. The roadway there had a hill decline and it was icy then. That could've been a factor. There was some alcoholic beverages found at the scene. That could also be a factor. The nature of the accident scene showed the vehicle rolled more than once. So, there was quite a bit of dynamics to the accident itself," Kellner said.

The Dubois County Coroner's Office says they won't know Haas' official cause of death for another couple of weeks, while they review his medical records and wait for toxicology results.
