SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Leave it to fourth and fifth-graders to answer the call to help troops overseas this Christmas.

From footballs, cards and games, 39 troops from Ohio who are serving overseas are sure to have a brighter holiday thanks to the students at Crissey Elementary.

"We want to be able to give back to the community, and one of the things that we do is called ‘Adopt-a-Platoon,'" explained Mark Clair, co-owner of the Retirement Guys. "So we've adopted a platoon: the 838th Military Police."

The Retirement Guys teamed up with the fourth and fifth grade classes at Crissey for the project.

"I knew that a bunch of people in my family have been in the Army, and I know how they felt," said Trey Materni, in the fifth grade. "My cousin, he just got back a year ago from fighting in the war in Afghanistan, and now he is in Florida, and I knew how they felt. Sometimes it doesn't go well for them. So I thought if I got them some of those presents, that they would have more fun."

The kids wrote cards to the troops, and each of them will receive handmade stockings, on top of all the other goodies.

For the adults, the outpouring of support is proof that kids have the biggest hearts.

"These kids are the most amazing kids I think I've ever taught," said Anjanette Newcombe, a math teacher. "They're kind, they're caring, they're considerate. They give even though they don't have a lot at this school. And a lot of them bought some of these presents with their very own money, and that says a lot about these kids and that's a typical Springfield kid."
