Bond grows between co-workers through kidney donation

BELTON, MO (KCTV) -

The bond between two elementary school co-workers has grown even more through a unique donation.

Michelle Lewis teaches third grade at Gladden Elementary in Belton, MO. In October 2012 her husband Damon went into kidney failure and was diagnosed as having a protein deficiency. Now he is in need of a transplant.

"We are a very tight-knight community so lots of people have been asked what his blood type was and how they could help," Michelle Lewis said.

While they looked for someone with a matching kidney, things declined for Damon Lewis. He went on dialysis in June of this year.

"My heart went out to their family. They are such a wonderful family," said Elizabeth Hart, a fellow teacher at Gladden.

Hart said Michelle Lewis was one of the first people to welcome her so, after class one day, she went to get tested. Hart found out she was a kidney donor match.

"I was given an opportunity to give a tremendous gift and to help someone else," she said.

When Michelle Lewis heard the news, she said all she was able to do was say thank you and give her friend a hug.

"I got goose bumps. It's just really awesome to think that people are in your life for a very specific reason and you don't even realize it," Michelle Lewis said.

"I don't think we really exchanged too many words. It was just hugs," Hart said.

Ever modest, Hart said she is just helping a friend in need.

"I'm hopeful that everything goes well and that everyone can go on with a happy, healthy life," she said.
