Coroner identifies toddler killed in Harrison Co. crash

HARRISON COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - A toddler and Navy sailor were killed and an 11-month-old is in critical condition after a motor vehicle accident in Harrison County on Thursday morning.

According to Harrison County officer Eric Fischer, the 23-year-old Navy sailor from Missouri was driving a Nissan when he crossed the interstate's median and crashed into the path of a Mercury Mountaineer, driven by a grandmother whose daughter and two grandchildren were passengers, on Interstate 64 near mile marker 106 at 9:11 a.m.

Semi driver Michael Whitehouse was heading to Louisville with a load of new vehicles when the crash happened in front of him. Whitehouse said he avoided the accident by veering off the interstate when he saw the Nissan cross the median into go into eastbound traffic.

"By the grace of God I was able to swerve to the right and miss all of them. It was a tragic, tragic day. This was horrible. My heart goes out to the families," Whitehouse said.

Law enforcement officers credited Whitehouse for saving lives by veering off the interstate.

"When he swerved he didn't cause any more injuries or fatalities because if he would've rear-ended the SUV it's hard to say what would've happened," Officer Fischer said.

Harrison County Coroner Rusty Sizemore identified the child who was killed as 2-year-old Marissa Summers of Laconia, Indiana. The 11-month-old child, who was injured was rushed to Kosair Children's Hospital and remains in critical condition, according to Kosair spokesman Brian Rublein.

The grandmother and mother in the SUV survived the accident.

Sizemore said the Navy sailor who was driving the Nissan was based in Virginia and was likely heading to his home state at the time of the crash. The sailor's identity has not been released.
