Neighborhood gathers donations for families in need

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

For families without a home, the holidays can be especially difficult. But for people being helped by Family House in Toledo, they're about to get a boost.

The Arlington Neighborhood Association (ANA) meets once a month. Aside from the usual business involving crime in the neighborhood, giving back was the December meeting theme.

Family House of Toledo is a shelter that helps homeless families. Right now, they have over 100 guests, and 61 of those are children, ages 15 and under.

While there is a need for toys and games at the shelter, the need is stronger for toiletries, socks, underwear, hats and mittens. So the donation boxes at the ANA meeting were filled with just that.

Members of ANA hold donation drives year round, but around the holidays when they hear of families and children living in shelters, they really want to help.

"It reminds you of how lucky you are. It really does," said Perry Lefevre, president of the ANA. "That's where you need to share. This time of year, that's what it's about. It should be about sharing. It should be all times of the year, but especially this time of year…And it's a tough time at holidays to be in a shelter, so we're going to try to help them out."

Donations can be dropped off at the Bethesda Christian Center between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m.
