(WMC-TV) - There is a lot to be thankful for this holiday, especially your family. And that is especially true for one family in North Mississippi.

If you asked two baby chickens living in DeSoto County what they were thankful for this Thanksgiving, they might tell you a turkey. That is because after their mother died, it was the turkey that raised the two baby chickens.

"The mother got out and we think maybe something caught it," said Barbara Baldwin, who owns the animals.

Chickens, Check and Speck, have been adopted by a turkey.

"You can't get nowhere near them, she's over protective," said Devin Gross.

Gross and his family have been blown away at that Thanksgiving bird is caring for the chickens, because the turkey does not really get along with any of the other animals.

"If she catches any of the other chickens, she'll fight them away until the other two will get to eat, so she's mother to the two baby chickens," said Baldwin.

When it is bed time, the turkey will even walk with the chickens to the coop before she roosts in the nearby tree.

"She knows that they can't protect themselves right now, she's like, 'Well I'll just protect them until they get big enough,' " said Gross.

While turkeys will be on the table for most families this Thanksgiving, Baldwin would not even think about parting ways with her birds that have become like family.

"I always make jokes about we could cook them and eat them and not have to buy turkeys but that won't ever happen," said Gross.

It is possible that this turkey may raise a few of her own next year, but for now these chickens have a mother to be thankful for.

"I think they just say, 'Well that's our mama.' If we could talk chicken talk I think that's what they're telling her, 'Your our mama,' " said Baldwin.
