The Dollar Store Diet

(WOIO) -

LA musician Papa Joe Aviance four years ago in his music video rapped "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" but he says what really saved his life was loosing weight.

At the time Aviance was 450 pounds. He says he saw himself in the video and realized he had to do something about his size. He talked about it on the show 'The Doctors.'

"When I saw that video I couldn't believe how heavy I had gotten. I was killing myself," says Papa Joe Aviance.

Aviance drank a two liter bottle of soda everyday, and ate fast food everyday -- so much that employees at the drive through knew his order.

He was laid off, broke, and hit rock bottom. But he pulled himself out of the darkness and turned his life around.

"I'm going to help motivate you. Inspire you and keep those dreams alive. So get up wake up and live for life," says Aviance.

Aviance started walking seven days a week, five miles a day, but, exercise was just part of the life changing experience.

Eating better the other part of his plan. How did he do it?

He threw everything out of his cupboards and fridge, then headed straight for the .99 store. He found a way to eat healthy on a shoestring budget.

Just $50 a week.

"This is my main area where I shop. I've got produce, I've got pre-packaged salads for lunches. I've got cottage cheese. I've got milk all for 99 cents," says Aviance.

In just two-to-three weeks he started shedding pounds. A year-and-a-half later, 200 lbs lighter.

"He is a great inspiration,' says registered dietician Helen Rhynard.

Helen Rhynard is a registered dietician who writes healthy menus for schools in the Cleveland area and helps food manufacturers with their products. She says Aviance's Diet Plan is smart and proves you don't have to break the bank to be healthy.

"The bottom line is just continue with whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Lean cuts of meat, physical activity. A mind frame toward healthier life," says Rhynard.

For Papa Joe Aviance the message is clear he says with exercise and his .99 store diet you can look and feel like a million bucks.
