Coach G is one constant in the UofL football program

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Paul Gering played football at Flaget High School with legends Howard Schnellenberger and Paul Hornung, and as a student at UofL, studied the game under legendary coach Frank Camp

"On Saturdays I would go and help him on the sideline," Gering said.

Coach G is currently in his 29th year as a special assistant to the head coach at UofL. "I started at UofL, it was 1984 with Howard Schnellenberger," he remembers.

The 79-year-old lives in a condo in Cardinal Town on the UofL campus, but for years lived in the dorm with the players.

"Coach G is this program. He's the first person here everyday. If you get locked out of your room, call Coach G," said Cards senior defensive tackle Brandon Dunn.

Gering looks forward to the day each year when the freshman arrive on campus. He is the first coach to greet them. "That's my game day, that's actually my game day, I call it, when they move in, and the main thing is to see how they grow from their freshman to their senior years," he said.

Preston Brown is a senior now, and remembers back to that first day. "When I first got here, Coach G was the first coach I saw when I moved into the dorms, He's just always around," Brown said.

He's around early every morning, and always has a bagel for current Cards head coach Charlie Strong. "I usually go to Panera and get him a bagel, he goes with plain with plain cream cheese."

"I started telling him, Coach G, you don't have to meet me here, and then he started showing up around 7 for the staff meetings, what a special person he is, and he means so much," Strong said.

How much longer will he do it? That answer is a simple one for a man who has given almost half his life to the program.

"This is my life, the players are my life, I call it, they're my heart beat, and as long as my health holds up, I'm going to hang in there."
