FORT KNOX, KY (WAVE) - Several libraries at Fort Knox schools are off limits. They are closed because safety concerns.
"We are looking at it from a safety standpoint and we find it's in our best interest to close it," Todd Curkendoll, assistant superintendent of Fort Knox Schools.
The only thing being checked out in five media center buildings, four of which are located at elementary schools, are their roofs.
"We have to be very strategic, we'll run in there a little bit, grab what we need and kinda dash back out," said Todd Kreider, principal at Pierce Elementary.
During our visit, soldiers were arriving at Pierce Elementary to pick up their children for the Thanksgiving break.
"It's just been a big inconvenience but we've made it through pretty well," Kreider said.
At Pierce Elementary, the school's library has been moved to a classroom. They plan to add shelves to make room for more books.
Curkendoll said this is the first time they've had to close a part of a school because of structural problems. The media centers, all five of which are stand alone buildings, were all built within three years of one another in 1985.
"I'm not concerned that it's a media center on a military installation," said Curkendoll. "We review all of our facilities on an annual basis to make sure they are up to standard and up to code."
The Army Corps of Engineers is set to study the buildings early January. The results are expected by the spring. Meanwhile, Kreider said the children and staff have adapted well.
"What we do in all schools," said Kreider, "we just have to make it work."
