SCS Board reaches settlement agreements with three municipalities

(WMC-TV) -The Shelby County School District Board of Education approved settlement agreements with Bartlett, Collierville, and Millington Tuesday.

This will resolve the legal disputes of whether the towns should form their own municipal districts.

Under these latest agreements, the three suburbs will pay between $2.7 million and $7.2 million over 12 years to help the district pay retiree-related costs..
In return, school buildings will be deeded to municipal districts for a token fee.

"I'm sure there will be a lot of things that unfold that will prove the fact that this is a good deal for us," said Collierville Mayor Stan Joyner.

Germantown remains the last hurdle, primarily because SCS wants to retain three schools that sit within the city limits. All sides met early Tuesday to negotiate.

"I know it's not as soon for some of the communities as they've wanted it done, but I think over the next few weeks we'll get everything concluded," said SCS board member Billy Orgel.

As a formality, these settlements need to be approved by the Shelby County Commission and each municipal school board once they are sworn in next month.
