Black Friday deals to fight for and ignore

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A new study can help you save money while minimizing headaches on Black Friday. Consumer Reports looked at all the deals that are out there this year to figure out which ones you need to target now, and which ones can wait.

If you're wondering why people started camping out at the St. Matthews Best Buy four days before Black Friday, Consumer Reports might have the answer.

Senior editor Jim Wilcox said of all the sales, electronics are the most likely to be a one time only deal.

"A lot of times you see lesser known brands advertised," Wilcox said. "But this year we are seeing some pretty big names: Vizio, Samsung, LG. So these are TV's you actually want to own."

Best Buy has a 55 inch TV for $500. A 39 inch TV for less than $200. Plus other big savings on top name brands.

Wilcox said many retailers offer store only prices on Black Friday in an effort to draw you in and sell you other stuff. But the competition is so fierce for your shopping dollars some stores will price match on line.

Wilcox said the key to online shopping is constantly watching the sale prices which may be short lived

"Amazon does a lot of sales but sometimes they are only 5 minutes long," Wilcox said. "They are refreshing these deals every tem minutes or so. So you're really going to have to spend the time to go in and look at the various sites, and do a lot of comparison shopping."

Black Friday app's can help, as can app's such as Shop Savvy and Red Laser, which allow you to scan a price on your mobile device in store and see if the item is being offered cheaper somewhere else.

One thing Consumer Reports says you can wait on past Black Friday is toys.

"There are some door buster specials, and you may not see those prices again," Wilcox said. "But the truth is a lot of times, particularly in a tough economy, and depending on the inventory of those items, they could get cheaper as you get closer to Christmas.

In other words, don't feel like the bargains are gone when Black Friday is.

Following stores on Facebook and Twitter are another way to get special deals.

Consumer Reports 44% of Americans plan to shop this Black Friday, up from 30% a year ago.
