Cedar Point already preparing for next season

SANDUSKY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Cedar Point is one of the happiest places in Ohio. While the rides have stopped running for the year, park workers are already preparing for the next tourism season.

The screams have died down on the coasters and the "closed" sign is now up, but employees at Cedar Point say, it's far from quiet. Park officials say now that the tourism season has passed, the real work begins.

"We start with taking all of the trains off the track. We take each car off the track and then we bring it to a storage area," said Eric Lapp, ride maintenance manager.

That storage area is where each of the 200 ride seats are broken down one by one, and inspected.

"It's not just turning off the key, coming back in the spring to get these coasters going!" said Lapp.

While next spring and summer is a long ways away, this week, construction is under way for two new rides set to debut in 2014.

"We're really focusing on family-friendly thrills next summer. This summer, we had Gatekeeper, which was an awesome new roller coaster, and next year, again, we're going to focus on family thrills with two new additions. Pipe Scream, which is kind of a hybrid roller coaster/thrill ride, and then American Eagles, which is a spinning ride. It kind of simulates the sensation of flight," explained Cedar Point spokesperson Bryan Edwards.

Cedar Point officials say getting a head start before the crowds - and the heat -come back, is what makes a successful summer.

"Every year we try to add something new to Cedar Point and freshen up all different areas. The park is a lot of different things to different people. For some, it's riding as many rides and roller coasters as they can. For others with families, with young children, it's just having a day's worth of fun and creating memories," said Edwards.

For now, anyone looking for a thrill this winter can still stop by Cedar Point's Castaway Bay indoor water park.
