LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Metro Police warned weekend holiday shoppers to protect themselves and their belongings while visiting local stores.

Among the tips:

  • Park in well-lit areas
  • Walk in pairs to and from stores
  • Do not leave purchases unattended in cars
  • Lock valuables in your trunk
  • Don't leave GPS or cell phones in plain sight
  • Lock away receipts, which can be targets for identity theft
  • Lock car doors, even if you'll be away for only a few minutes
  • Report suspicious activity

Shoppers in St. Matthews said they felt safe, especially because they already follow many of the tips.

"There are so many people here, I don't feel unsafe at all," shopper Joanie McGuire said. "Just act like you know what you're doing -- don't look hesitant."

Sarah Davies brought husband Stephen along on a shopping trip to purchase Christmas gifts for their two kids.

"That's why I bring him -- he's my safety," she said.

The couple said they consider their safety while shopping after dark, and usually try to park as close to the store as possible.

Police also reminded shoppers that crime doesn't always happen after the sun goes down, and to also remain alert during the daytime hours.
