McCord Road underpass construction begins

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The first of seven buildings to be torn down to clear the way for the McCord Road underpass project has been demolished.

It's a project which has been in the planning stages since 2000, and now construction is expected to start in 2014.

Lucas County Engineer Keith Earley says important prep work has started to make sure the project stays on course.

"The demolition should be done within a few weeks. In all there's seven buildings that have to come down. After that is all done they'll begin utility relocation and in the Spring the project will be sold," said Mr. Earley.

It's a projected $33 million project to divert traffic under the busy Norfolk-Southern rail line.

Earley says it'll save people time and money by not having to stop for a train, and it'll reduce pollution in the process as well.

There will be some traffic delays associated with the construction project, but Earley says that won't be a major concern until 2015.
