OH Walmart asks employees for Thanksgiving donations

A Canton, Ohio Walmart's request for employees to donate canned foods for other workers is becoming a hot topic on news sites and social media.

Bins have been placed in an employees-only area of the world's largest retailer's location in Canton, The Plain Dealer reports. The sign on the bins reads, "Please donate food items here so associates in need can enjoy Thanksgiving dinner."

The photo was tweeted by labor rights activists Working America and has quickly gone viral.

Walmart spokesman said the collection bins are an example of how employees look out for each other, in this case, by collecting food for less fortunate co-workers.

Worker rights activists say this drive shows how little Walmart workers are paid and demonstrates the need to pay reform to raise wages.

The controversy comes as stock clerks and other low-wage workers at Walmart in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Evendale went on strike Monday night. The employees have since went back to work.

Bonnie Howard-Wiggins said she thought Walmart should give free turkeys or hams to its employees.

"The associate can choose which one they prefer," Howard-Wiggins said. "That would help with the expense of the associate's Thanksgiving dinner."

Walmart has more than 2 million employees company-wide and has been criticized in the past for paying low wages. The retail giant reported $15.7 billion in profits last year.
