Tiffin’s new dispatch center running in time for Sunday storms

TIFFIN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Tiffin's new dispatch center has been months in the making, and it couldn't have been completed at a better time.

Before severe storms hit in July, the 30-year-old dispatch center in Tiffin was already outdated. But the severe weather made it even worse by knocking out half of the system. Officials say another severe storm could have wiped it out completely. As of mid-October, the new system is up and operational.

The new center is high tech, complete with touch-screen workstations that allow dispatchers to sit or stand with everything they need in one location. It cost about $100,000, but Police Chief Fredrick Stevens say it's money well spent.

Almost a month into using it, severe weather - including tornados in northwest Ohio – was the system's first real test. The chief says it passed.

"[I] talked to the dispatchers last night, they didn't have any problems, no flickering of any of the equipment up there," he said. "So it kind of made it through its christening or its grand opening last night during that storm."
