BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

ODOT has been using green lights on plows for about a year now to help keep drivers safe, and so far, they say it's working.

The department chose to install the lights after seeing an increase in rear-end accidents when their plows were out on the roads. They chose green flashing lights because the color green is better-seen by the human eye.

Officials say so far, the lights have been making their truck drivers feel safer.

"In the past, sometimes the yellow lights, it was hard to differentiate between a tow truck and say some of the other vehicles that were out on the road that might have had those lights," said Theresa Pollick, a ODOT's public information officer. "By having the green lights, it's a great safety improvement because you recognize that, ‘hey, that's an ODOT plow.'"

In northwest Ohio, about 60 percent of the trucks have the lights. They hope that 90 percent will have them this winter.
