City plans roundabouts to replace 'thousand island' intersection

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A massive intersection in central Toledo known as the ‘thousand island' intersection may soon be easier to navigate for drivers.

The intersection of Cherry Street, Collingwood Boulevard, Manhattan Boulevard, Detroit Avenue and Berdan Avenue is among the most difficult to traverse in the city.

Changes are coming to the area, as the Ohio Department of Transportation moves forward with a plan to widen I-75 and the Toledo Lucas County Port Authority continues work to clean up the Overland Park Industrial District.

"All of that means that our local streets system has to adapt to and take account of all these changes, and take advantages of them," said David Dysard with the city's engineering services department.

In order to alleviate congestion, the city plans to build five roundabouts at the following intersections.

  • Berdan Avenue at Haverhill Drive
  • Jeep Parkway at Berdan Avenue
  • Detroit Avenue at Berdan Avenue
  • Cherry Street at Manhattan Boulevard
  • Manhattan Boulevard at Phillips Avenue

Though there may be a learning curve for drivers dealing with the roundabouts, the city says the reconstructed intersections will be safer.

"They [roundabouts] are safer and much more efficient because they are designed with proper approach entry angles," said Dysard.

The total price tag for the project is $12.5 million.

There will be a public forum on the roundabouts at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, November 18 at Rosa Park Elementary.

Construction for the first roundabout at Detroit Avenue and Berdan Avenue will begin in late 2014.
