BG nature center in need of updates

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

BowlingGreen officials just launched an ambitious campaign to raise money without thecity's help, in an effort to repair a 47-year-old building.

Officialssay the current layout for the Bowling Green Wintergarden Park Nature Center isn'tcutting it anymore.

"There'sno insulation in the ceiling or walls. The flooring is 47 years old. Thecabinets are 47 years old. The fireplace is cracked," said Dr. MichelleGrigore, director of Parks and Recreation.

Nowthey're asking for the community's help to raise $250,000 to renovate thecenter, which is often used as a meeting up for park visitors and educationalprograms for children.

Thenumber one complaint is the outdoor bathroom, the only one available in all 108acres of the park. When the nature center is closed, no one can get in to usethe bathroom.

"Tobuild a free-standing unisex restroom that will be open anytime the park isopen…really, that's the number one need," Grigore said.

Theplans also call for a new kitchen, fireplace, and much-needed insulation.Parents say they want to see more space for children's programming.

"Moreroom for the kinds of things she does with our kids," said Heather Kramer, aparent. "It would be awesome to see that happen, for her to be able to grow theprogram and have access to all types of materials that maybe she would want touse."

Thechallenge is finding the money to make it happen. Grigore says they are notasking for funding from the city because, "We've had the same money for 13years, so my budget is really stretched."

TheBG Community Foundation will help raise the money to make the plans a reality.
