ODOT takes public comments on plan to widen I-75 in north Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Ohio Department of Transportation held a meeting to take comments from the public Thursday evening. The department is giving the public a chance to voice concerns, or ask questions about a plan to widen I-75 from Lagrange Street to I-280 in north Toledo.

ODOT officials took questions from community members, and responded to written concerns submitted by mail. ODOT says the widening will make drivers safer and prevent traffic backups.

"Farther down south between Perrysburg and Findlay, if one lane is restricted due to construction, due to an accident, it will usually turn into issues with traffic. So we want to eliminate that and allow traffic to flow a little bit more freely," said ODOT spokeswoman Theresa Pollick.

With the project, left side entrance ramps to I-280 on southbound 75 and vice versa will be big changes. They will be moved to the right to eliminate cross-traffic weaving.

"You've got a lot of different merge factors, especially when you go from northbound [75] to I-280," Pollick said. "That is one of the areas that we're looking at improving and that's why we want to get the feedback from the public. And of course safety is one of the biggest factors that we're looking for in this project."

To some residents at the meeting, the work planned is not enough and needs to not stop at 280, where they say numerous accidents are causing major problems.

"I'm disappointed," said James Brown, a concerned resident. "I'm all for widening 75, but I'm disappointed that they haven't fixed something that continues to injure and kill people down here."

The $45 million project is still in the planning stages and is not funded yet. Once funding is received, ODOT expects the project to begin sometime in 2015 and take about two years to complete.
