(WMC-TV) - The University of Memphis' interim president is quoted as saying that if he could waive out-of-state tuition, he would do it in an effort to increase enrollment.

Some students at the university think it is a great idea, while others disagree.

College tuition is a tough mountain for most students to climb.

"It's expensive, really expensive," said University of Memphis freshman Breanna Griffin.

Griffin transferred to the U of M from Illinois. She knew Memphis was where she wanted to go after high school.  She would love to see out-of-state tuition waived.

"I think a lot of people are intimidated by paying as much as they do just to get the education they feel like they need," she said.

University of Memphis Interim President Brad Martin is hoping to eliminate out-of-state tuition.

Martin says by doing this, enrollment will go up and as a result, so will graduation rates.

But not all students agree.

"If we lower the amount of talented people from in state, it would lower their incentive to come here," said freshman Aaron Canales.

Canales says he likes the smaller feel of the U of M and he wants it to stay that way.

"So, if we were simply to make it easier to get in, then you'd have a whole bunch of people who aren't necessarily serious about the academic environment," he added.

U of M officials say they are also planning to enter into a student recruiting effort and enlarge its online course offerings to bring in new students.

Top university leaders have scheduled a tentative meeting for this Monday to further discuss this out-of-state tuition issue.
