Are Chief Diggs’ days with TPD numbered?

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Will the new mayor want a new head for the Toledo Police Department?

Mayor-elect Michael Collins has been quiet on the subject, not saying definitively if he would keep Chief Derrick Diggs in his current position or not. He was, however, candid about Chief Diggs during an interview with Toledo News Now anchor Jerry Anderson.

"I do find that very, very compromising when a police officer who has taken an oath of office will stand there and be silent when another person is being persecuted for something that other person had no responsibility for," Collins said.

Jerry then asked if Collins had trust in the police chief.

"We're going to have a very serious talk about that issue," Collins responded.

District 5 Councilman Tom Waniewski invited the chief to a west Toledo meeting Wednesday to discuss crime in the community and projects within the police department. Among questions about crime, many asked about Diggs' future with the department.

Diggs said he has met with Collins, but he is not ready to discuss his future.

"The only thing I can tell you is that I am the chief of police. I enjoy being the chief of police, I love being the chief of police," he said. "As far as my future here, it's not appropriate to be discussed right now."

As for neighborhood crime, Diggs said from 2011 to 2013, focus crimes are down in District 5 by 20 percent, and reported crimes are down 9 percent.

"We know that there are some burglaries out here, we know there's some crime with thefts and stuff, but compared to citywide, crime is very low here and they need to hear that from the chief," Diggs said.

He also discussed expanding the Domestic Violence Unit and implementing community-oriented policing in 2014.
